“Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: one hundred forty-four thousand, sealed from every tribe of the Israelites” (Revelation 7:4, CEB).

One of my daughter’s best friends is Gurneet. Gurneet’s parents are from India. Many Indian women are known to wear a bindi. Bindi comes from a word in Sanskrit which means drop. A bindi looks as though a drop of ink has been placed in the middle of one’s forehead.

I once asked Gurneet about the significance of the bindi. What she told me was fascinating. For some, the bindi is a symbol of style. Theologically, the mark is known as the “third eye.”

IF YOU HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING THE CURRENT SERMON SERIES, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CHAPTERS OF REVELATION:  Revelation: 5-12

“Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the one seated on the throne. It had writing on the front and the back, and it was sealed with seven seals. I saw a powerful angel, who proclaimed in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?”   But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or look inside it…Then one of the elders said to me, “Don’t weep. Look! The Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has emerged victorious so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

“Write this to the angel of the church in Ephesus:

These are the words of the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven gold lampstands: I know your works, your labor, and your endurance. I also know that you don’t put up with those who are evil. You have tested those who say they are apostles but are not, and you have found them to be liars.  You have shown endurance and put up with a lot for my name’s sake, and you haven’t gotten tired.  But I have this against you: you have let go of the love you had at first.  So remember the high point from which you have fallen. Change your hearts and lives and do the things you did at first. If you don’t, I’m coming to you. I will move your lampstand from its place if you don’t change your hearts and lives” (Revelation 2:2-5).

“I correct and discipline those whom I love. So be earnest and change your hearts and lives” (Revelation 3:19, CEB).

I often am struck by the message God does not communicate through the Scriptures as much as I am by what God does say. The book of Revelation is actually a letter from God delivered through the pen of John, Jesus’ disciple. The letter was circulated among the seven churches that were in existence during the latter part of the first century.

“To those who emerge victorious, keeping my practices until the end, I will give authority over the nations”
 (Revelation 2:26, CEB).

The proclamation above was written to the church in Thyatira. Thyatira was located in the northwest province of Manisa, Turkey. The ancient city was known for its textile trade, bronze work, and weavings. Artisans and merchants would travel to Thyatira great distances to sell their goods.
