Recently, four Indigenous children from the Huitoto people were rescued in the Amazon jungle in Columbia. The youngsters ranged from eleven months to thirteen years of age. The foursome survived a plane crash that took the lives of three adults, including the children’s mother.

The story of Joseph is an example of a sibling rivalry gone toxic. Joseph was a teenager whose brothers faked his death and sold him into slavery. That traumatic turn of events would institutionalize many people.
For the next thirteen years, life for Joseph didn’t get much better. He was wrongly convicted of a crime he never committed. A friend failed to keep a promise, which wound up keeping Joseph in jail even longer.

And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory,
that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So, God granted him what he requested. (1 Chronicles 4:10, NKJV)
Following the publication of his book, The Prayer of Jabez, in 2000, Bruce Wilkinson noted a concern. Many who read the book misunderstood the intentions of Jabez’ prayer because of three words: “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and ENLARGE MY TERRITORY…” (1 Chronicles 4:10, NKJV). Enlarge my territory became understood as, “Grant me more wealth” or “Expand my power” or “Make me a success.” Sadly, Jabez’ prayer became the mantra for those who espouse a “Prosperity Theology.”

In 2004, I was traveling with a group of missionaries back to a local guesthouse in Haiti. As our bus was preparing to turn left onto a side street, a group of young Haitian men pulled alongside. Led by a police car with siren blaring, a caravan of shiny SUV’s laid on their horns. With smoke glass windows rolled half-way down, these thugs displayed their automatic weapons.
