No good deed goes unpunished. Maybe. Maybe not.

“These people who have been turning the world upside down have come here also” (Acts 17:6, NRSV).

Last week, an eighty-two year old man from British Columbia broke the Guinness World Record as the oldest man to perform a handstand. During an interview with CBS News Ives said:

“Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10, NIV).

There’s an amusing story told about the late British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. One day, Churchill was entertaining questions from members of the House of Commons. A memberof the Socialist party railed against Churchill, spewing venomous words against him. Meanwhile, Winston Churchill remained impassive. He actually looked bored. When it came time for Churchill to respond, he rose and said, “If I valued the opinion of the honorable gentleman, I might get angry.”

“Jacob replied, ‘I have traveled this earth for 130 hard years.’” (Genesis 47:9, NLT).

I admired her and at the same time I felt badly for her. I watched from a distance as a young mother pushed a stroller with two toddlers up a steep incline. Her diminutive stature didn’t do her any favors for this particular task.
