Isaiah describes three distinct modes by which we move ahead in life. First, there are those seasons when we seem to soar like eagles. Eagles can reach speeds of up to eighty miles per hour. Eagles can reach heights over a mile above the earth. But the strength to soar comes from without, not within. Eagles glide along upward air currents called thermals. As heated air rises above the ground, the eagle will simply spread its wings and allow the wind to carry it thousands of feet without ever flapping its wings.

James Moore once wrote about a beautiful spring day. A little girl went for a walk with her grandfather. As they sauntered along, enjoying the beauty of God’s creation, they came upon a garden. The little girl ran ahead and found a gorgeous rosebush covered with roses. Some of the roses were still buds and some were in full bloom. The little girl plucked one of the rosebuds and examined it closely. Then, with her fingers, she tried to open the rosebud and bring it to full bloom. But it didn’t work.

In Shakespeare’s play, As You Like It, Rosalind disguises herself as a man. She attempts to tutor Orlando in how to woo a woman. The woman of Orlando’s affection is, in fact, none other than Rosalind. He fell in love with Rosalind before her ploy to tutor him. Orlando wants more than anything to have a relationship with Rosalind. To which Rosalind utters this now popular line, “Why then, can one desire too much of a good thing?”
