As we study the book of Acts in our Disciple Bible Study Fast Track, we learn that the book focuses on four important people: Peter, Stephen, Phillip and Paul. Each person is important in fulfilling the promise of Jesus in Acts 1:8 “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.”

Many stories are told in the Old Testament that lead readers to scratch their heads. One of these confounding tales is recorded in First Chronicles, chapter twenty-one. King David commanded Joab to take a census of Israel. The act was viewed by God as an affront. Ultimately, 70,000 Israelite’s lost their lives because of David’s sin.

Both of my grandfathers were railroad workers. Each man lived in cities where steel was king. Clarence and Roy were markedly different from one another yet had one thing in common. They were ordinary laborers.

Come, Join the Barnabas Club!

In Acts 4:36-37 we are introduced to an amazing man, Barnabas. He is mentioned some twenty times in the Acts of the Apostles. Luke cites Barnabas as a role model of the believers. Barnabas had on his resume’ that he was a Levite and was from Cyprus. Levites were descendants of the tribe of Levi. They assisted and served the Priesthood in the sanctuary, distributed the tithes to the needy and taught and interpreted the verdicts of the law. Barnabas was related to the author of the gospel of Mark. John Mark was his cousin.

The first nine chapters of First Chronicles lists several generations beginning with Adam and concluding in the early sixth century B.C. Genealogies can be boring unless the genealogy happens to list your family. The more personal a document is, the more interesting it becomes.

Why are some prayers answered while others are not? This is a question I hear all too frequently. The question is somewhat misleading. The Scriptures claim that God responds to every prayer. The problem is that God’s answer isn’t always in keeping with our greatest hopes.
