              I am a planner. My eyes are frequently focused on what lies ahead. Most of the time, this manner of living brings me a sense of control and peace. But there are also instances where my penchant for getting my flight plan in order produces butterflies in my stomach.

     During the beginning of the Blitzkrieg in 1939, the British government had concerns about the mental stability of its citizens. Most people were not prepared for the horrors that would come. Some believed London would suffer from three times as many psychological casualties as they would physical injuries.

Daily Devotion August 29, 2024

“Train children in the way they should go; when they grow old, they won’t depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6, CEB).
 
     I spoke with a parent yesterday who minutes earlier left the kindergarten classroom after dropping her daughter off to school for the first time. Her tears reflected both the pain and pride she felt as her child took this major step toward independence. The emotionally charged transition denotes a season of hope combined with a deep sense of loss.

“It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword”  (Acts 12:1-2, NIV).

         I spent the better part of ten days hunting for seashells on a Florida beach recently. I found a collection of cockles, olives, whelks, and clams. My most prized shell, however, is a three-inch scallop.

Daily Devotion August 8, 2024

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more” (Revelation 21:1, NRSV).

             As a Christian, what on earth am I here for? I’m not asking so much of an existential question, as one that is theological. If I believe in Jesus Christ and I am saved by faith rather than by works, then my ultimate hope is to return to my true home in heaven with the One who created me. However, what am I to do between my second birth in Christ and my eventual death? Am I simply buying time until the moment comes for me to cross the bar? Does what I do now and how I act in this life have any impact on the life to come?
