As our modern age increases in complexity, the decisions we must make become harder. Psychologist, Barry Schwartz, calls this dilemma “choice paralysis.” And while few of us would argue for limited choices, our escalating bent toward indecision can lead ultimately to stagnation.
James, the brother of Jesus, offered the following advice to those of us who are facing a myriad of decisions: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5, ESV). Unfortunately, many people gloss over this important step. We ask Jesus for help and quickly move forward with our decision.
Yet James reminds us to take time to pray. When facing a complex series of decisions, one might say:
“Jesus, I want to make godly choices. Help me to discern the options that best reflect your character and purpose for this world. Whatever path I choose, my goal is to please you. Should my choice be consistent with your will, please grant me success. If my decision is contrary to your plans, grant me failure. Either way, grant me the humility and wisdom to deal with the consequences that result. Amen.”
