Today, WLW airs its broadcasts through a 747-foot-tall, diamond-shaped, 50,000-watt radio tower near the same site. Several cables have been put into place to anchor the structure. The supportive cabling is necessary for keeping the looming tower upright.
Exodus chapter seventeen records a story of two friends who supported Moses during a critical time in the life of the Jewish community. The Israelites were forced into a battle with a nomadic group of people known as the Amalekites. Joshua led the Jews against the enemy attack while Moses, Aaron, and Hur watched from a nearby hill.
Whenever Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed. When Moses lowered his hands, the Amalekites prevailed. Eventually, Moses’ strength wore out and he became weary. So, Aaron and Hur stepped in by holding up Moses’ arms until the Israelites finally gained victory.
Moses enjoyed great success throughout the latter third of his life. He demonstrated great skill, courage, and tenacity. Yet Moses also revealed a great depth of humility by agreeing to accept assistance from others.
One of the great challenges many face today is the pressure of having our lives all together. We often feel the need to hide our fears and limitations. We fear that by accepting help from others we will be perceived as weak and ineffective.
Yet a strong indication of our inner strength is the humility to embrace the support given to us by trusted friends and colleagues. As author, Kiera Cass, says, “Accepting help is its own kind of strength.” Likewise, to refuse help places us in jeopardy of collapsing due to our sense of pride.
