Prayer Power

It’s reported that the late evangelist, Dwight L. Moody, had a room behind the pulpit called the “Powerhouse”. The “Powerhouse” was a small room where a few saints gathered to pray while the Minister was preaching.
They prayed for an openness of the congregation to the message and for the Minister to speak with authority and power. They asked for the Holy Spirit to be present in power. Moody said he could tell when the “powerhouse” was in operation. He noticed how much more confident he was when he preached and how his mind remembered words that weren’t in the manuscript to include in the message.

That being said, we need to resurrect the “Powerhouses” in our Churches throughout the land. Blessed is the Pastor who has a group of dedicated laypersons who will call on heaven during the service to bring about renewal in the life of his/her Church.

There was a powerhouse of a prayer meeting described by Luke. Jesus had been with the Apostles and others for forty days and was about to ascend to heaven. He told his disciples to “tarry in Jerusalem until you are endured with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49) When Jesus was ascended to heaven, a ten day prayer meeting was held in the Upper Room. The Apostles and others knocked on the door of heaven and sought God Almighty. The result was Pentecost. The Spirit came and the Church was formed and God’s disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit.

I have noticed that I am as effective as my prayer life. Spending long hours watching baseball, basketball and football games and then giving ten minutes to prayer won’t cut it. A daily prayer life is necessary. Spending time thinking, praying and meditating is just as essential as keeping my appointment with my doctor. Such regimentation brings results too. The Holy Spirit begins to quicken your mind; a new insight into the Holy Scriptures occurs; a new and exciting thought comes out of our subconscious mind and more.

Another thing occurs too. The problems you thought were so big seem to be smaller and can be handled without panic. In John 14:12-14, Jesus says “Truly I tell you the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I’m going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.” This scripture becomes a reality when you set aside time to watch and pray.

I miss seeing you all on Sundays.
